ASK DR NOVOA – What is the best form of birth control?

The best form of birth control is abstinence, j/k :).

Currently the best form of irreversible birth control is the vasectomy. But good luck getting most men to even talk about Tue subject without getting weak in the knees. The best form of reversible birth control is the Mirena Intrauterine Device (IUD). The Mirena continues a small amount of hormone (progesterone) which helps control bleeding and increases its efficacy. It has a failure of 1/1000. A nice side effect is that it can reduce or eliminate menstrual periods while on it. It can be kept in for up to 5 years. It takes about 2 minutes to place and about 15 seconds to remove. Although IUDs have gotten a bad rap, they are one of the safest and most reliable forms of birth control and are not affected by other medications such as antibiotics. And they don’t make you gain weight!!! So consider the IUD if you want to wait on having a baby.
